Class FAQ’s

Coming on Your Own? You're Not Alone!

If you're feeling a bit nervous about coming to a class on your own—please don’t worry. You wouldn’t be the first, and you definitely won’t be the only one! Lots of people come to my workshops solo, and by the end of the session, they’ve usually made something lovely and had a good chat with a few new faces too.

The studio is a friendly, welcoming space with a relaxed, informal feel. Whether you’re the chatty type or prefer to quietly get stuck into the making, there’s no pressure.

So if you’ve been putting it off or feeling unsure—please know you’ll be met with a warm welcome!

What is included in the class price?

Please see individual class listings for full details, but in general, all materials, tools, and equipment are included in the cost of your workshop.

Tea, coffee, and water will be provided, along with delicious cake from our lovely Cornhill Village Shop. If you have any dietary requirements or allergies, please let me know when booking and I’ll do my best to accommodate them.

Please note that for the Simple Ring and Simple Bangle classes, there won’t be a refreshment break due to the shorter class length—but water will be available throughout.

Lunch Info

If your class runs over lunchtime, you’re welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Or, pop into Cornhill Village Shop beforehand—they offer lovely filled rolls, pastries and quiches.

What to Wear

Silversmithing can get a little messy! Please avoid wearing your best clothes. Choose something comfortable and fitted (nothing loose or flowing), and no sandals or open-toe shoes.

If you wear glasses, don’t forget them. Long hair should be tied back for safety.

Aprons and safety glasses will all be provided to help keep you comfortable and protected while you work. (please note that aprons are not provided for silver clay or the Simple Ring/Bangle classes).

Studio Location

Classes take place at:
Cornhill on Tweed Centre, Northumberland, TD12 4UE

what3words: electrode.practical.gladiators

Enter via St Helen’s Gardens from the main road (A698 – see map below). Please drive slowly, as children may be playing.

Plenty of free parking is available on-site. The studio is through the main entrance, second door on the left off the main hall or it can be accessed through the side door from the car park. Disabled parking is directly outside the studio (go through the main gates of the centre and turn left into the carpark – my studio is opposite the basketball hoop).

Arrival Time

Please aim to arrive about 5 minutes before the class starts. Try not to arrive earlier, as I may still be setting up. The main door of the centre will be open before the class so you’re welcome to wait in the main hall or outside on the benches. The toilets will also be open. If you’re running late on the day, please try to call or text me on 07472 325436.

Class Duration

Each class listing includes an estimated duration. Please note these are approximate and may vary slightly depending on group size and individual pace.

If you need to leave by a certain time, let me know at the start and I’ll do my best to help.

Disabled Access

The studio is wheelchair accessible, with disabled parking right outside and an accessible toilet inside the centre.

Some areas of the studio are slightly narrow and the workbenches are a fixed height, so please get in touch before booking if you’d like to chat through your needs. One part of the class uses a machine operated by a foot pedal, but I’m always happy to assist if needed.

Please let me know at the time of booking if you require disabled access so I can make sure everything is set up for your visit.

Age Restrictions

The minimum age for classes is 13, and anyone under 16 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian who’s also taking part in the class. Exceptions can sometimes be made for younger children – please get in touch with me to discuss before booking the class.

Safety Information

Your safety is a priority. All tools are used with clear guidance, and safety glasses and *aprons are provided for silversmithing classes. (*please note: aprons are not provided for Silver Clay or the Simple Ring/Bangle classes.)

Please be aware that jewellery making involves tools and heat—by joining a class, you agree to take part at your own risk and follow all safety instructions.

To keep the space enjoyable for everyone, anyone acting in an unsafe or inappropriate way may be asked to leave.

Maggie Read Jewellery cannot accept responsibility for lost or damaged belongings or injuries sustained during class.

Can I Bring My Own Gemstones or Metal to use in the class?

In most cases, bringing your own materials isn’t possible, but feel free to get in touch before the class and I’ll be happy to advise.

Private & Group Bookings

Jewellery classes are a great activity for friends and family so if you would like to enquire about a private group booking, please fill in the contact form here.

Private classes can accommodate up to 6 people, and pricing is based on a full group of six for silver clay and 5 to 6 for silversmithing classes.  If it’s a special occasion, I’ll even arrange a cake at no extra cost.

More details about private classes and cancellation policies can be found here.

Mac, the Studio Dog

Mac (my schnoodle!) usually spends class days at doggy day care, but occasionally he’ll be in the studio. He’s very friendly, but if you’re allergic or nervous around dogs, please let me know when you book.

Gift Vouchers

E-vouchers and postal vouchers are available here.

Vouchers are valid for 12 months from date of purchase (the class can take place after this, as long as it’s booked within the 12 month period). Postal vouchers with a remaining balance can be used towards jewellery purchases in the studio. Please bring the voucher with you as you won’t be able to use it otherwise.
